AVEVA PI migration to open-stack alternatives

The problem

Locked into licensing that never decreases

AVEVA PI and similar proprietary historians come with annual licensing that only goes up. Proprietary connectors for every data source. A shrinking pool of expensive certified specialists. European industrial clients know they are overpaying — but there is no exit without a migration plan.

Most clients have explored alternatives. The problem is not finding a replacement database. The problem is migrating decades of historical data, replicating the data flow from existing SCADA systems, and doing it without interrupting operations that run 24/7.

The consultants these firms currently work with understand AVEVA PI. They do not understand the open-source alternative stack well enough to architect a migration. That is the gap Omonvolt fills.

Our approach

Audit, parallel-run, cutover — zero data loss

Every migration starts with a full infrastructure audit. We map every data source, every connector, every downstream consumer. We document what PI is actually doing — not what the architecture diagram says it does.

We run TDengine in parallel with the existing PI system. Same data sources, same connectors via OPC-UA, same retention policies. The parallel-run phase validates that TDengine handles the client's specific workload before any cutover discussion begins.

Cutover is planned per-plant, per-line, with rollback procedures documented and tested. We do not ask clients to trust a migration plan. We show them the parallel system running with their data and let the numbers make the case.

Post-migration, we provide the operational documentation, Grafana dashboards, and alerting configuration that the client's operations team needs to run the system independently.

Deliverables

  • Complete PI System infrastructure audit — data sources, connectors, downstream consumers
  • TDengine deployment configured for client-specific workload
  • OPC-UA and MQTT connector migration from PI to open-stack
  • Parallel-run validation with data fidelity reporting
  • Per-plant, per-line cutover plan with documented rollback procedures
  • Grafana dashboards replacing PI ProcessBook and PI Vision
  • Operational handover documentation and training
